Reference images

Post by Trapets »

Hei All!

Maybe we could set up a Dropbox or another storage or cloud, where we can collect reference images by subject (terrain ref, city ref, army unit ref etc).
Some long time ago i found a good website from internet where you had a chance to view very old American newspapers. Newspapers were full of just such pictures as in Imp1 were illustrations of technical achievements. I hope i can dig it out from my old bookmark backups.

IIRC there is a newspaper that has free archives going back to the late 1800's. Also, Google's Patent search returns scans of patents going back to the creation of the patent office.

For everything else, I'm either using Imp1 or other game art, the Macroporn sections of Reddit, or Google searching 19th century paintings for inspiration.

We have a collective DropBox place. Just look at the Artwork link in the upper line of the forum page. I shared a DropBox folder. I read that it should be possible that others can use it as if it would be their own. However nobody did until now. It would be nice if somebody could and would tell me if it is working or if I need to provide some more credentials...?

As for old patents or newspapers: that would be cool. :)

I tried to upload my sound effects there, but can't. And I've got a dropbox account ...

Trilarion should add users to Dropbox with e-mail invitations.

Dropbox invitation

Post by Trilarion »

Seems right. I misunderstood it so far. If you have a Dropbox account, I need the email of it to invite you. I will sent a PM through the forum shortly to all the guys delivering content: Trapets, Creator, Haxaco, Ven. If you don't have a Dropbox account and don't want one, just ignore it. :)

If you get the email and can successfully connect to the Dropbox, please tell here shortly how it works, so I can explain to others. I remember that I already once invited Ven and it wasn't obvious what to do.

So yes, the explanation is that I kept a copy of all your submitted files so far in a folder there with your name. :D You can keep this folder or rename it or do whatever you want with it.

This goes for all contributors: The only thing I don't like is if somebody deletes his own or other works. Once you submit it there, it is open source and there is no way going back. Dropbox has an undelete feature and I will use it. You shouldn't contribute (and store in the Dropbox) what you don't want to have shared and once you decide to share something this decision is final. The team together might decide that one can remove something though. This is just a small rule to make working together more comfortable. :)
