Absolutely true but not specific enough.

"Age of Metternich", ... however might be a bit too specific.

My suggestion for today: "Steel, Paper, Gun"

I actually like someting like Paper, Steel, and Guns, representing the order of importance on diplomacy, industrial and internal strength, and military might. The only problem comes when people don't know anything about the name: the word paper instantly makes me think of bad smartphone indie games.

Some other ideas:

- The Highest Stage of Capitalism, A reference to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperialis ... Capitalism, with other references including:
- The Division of the World among the Great Powers
- The Special Case of Capitalism

Also

- Ultra-Imperialismus (from Kautsky's work)
- Cartels of Capitalism (Kautsky)

But I don't know how I feel about any of them. A huge issue I see in historical TBS names is that certain words are just painfully oversaturating: empire, imperial, conquest, etc. but those are the only words that explain what is going on.

I like "The Highest Stage of Capitalism" myself, it gets my vote. Not only that, but if we ever do an expansion/DLC(?) that adds socialist/Communist revolutionary things as a power, it opens up that as an avenue that keeps in theme with the title. :D

It's not only capitalism, in the sense that if money cannot buy you something you just take it by force.

I like Division of the World. In general I associate Imperialism with domination (by all means), power, rule, nationalism, supremacy, industrialization, assimiliation, expansion and just a certain era in history (broadly 19th century and beginning 20th century).

I don't really see that we have to give up the name Imperialism, since it is exactly what the game will be about. And game titles have to be somewhat short and catchy and easy to understand.

- Crest of Power
- War and Peace (hommage to Tolstoy)
- Ascent to Power
- Guns, Pacts and Steel - The Golden Age of Imperialism
- Golden Age of Imperialism - Of guns, pacts and steel
- The Way to Power (W2P would be catchy)
- By all Means
- Imperial Battlefields
- Pacts of Steel
- Fate of Imperialism, Fate of the World
- For King and Country

Problem with all of them is that they are so generic. Many games could be called like this. It would be nice if we had our own word/trademark for what we are doing. Also the title must be catchy. A good test is if you imagine asking a friend: "Hey fancy a game of XXX?". It should sound interesting then.

"For Empire" Might be a good one.

You know, as in wars for empire. That way it can be abbreviated as 4E =p

This is exactly the problem I run into when thinking up names, or even looking at games to play. It's made even worse when you realize that 2/3s of the names we have come up with are probably already copyrighted/trademarked as board games (it's a huuuuuge industry).

I really liked the Steel, Paper, and Guns. It works well like the book title Guns, Germs, and Steel. Perhaps we keep the three-word format and try some other combinations of words that relate to the game:

- Guns
- Steel
- Cannon
- Gold/Money
- Treaties
- Olive Branches
- Dynasties/Empires
- Emperors/Dictators/Kings
- Ships
- Soldiers

Those might have some options hidden in there. I really think we should try and brand the game in a way that indicates how ours is different from others. Imperialism was very diplomacy-heavy: there was no way to muscle through the game with rapid industrialization and militarization on the harder difficulties. Trade and relationships were vital. If our game is the same way, I think it's important to reflect that in our title.

If our game isn't just another globe-stomping war game, our name should say so.

Have it, stands right here. :)

My impression is, finding a good name is quite difficult and we should not try to hasten the decision. Just give it more time and whenever an association comes up put it also here. I would like a title, that is clear and catchy while also giving an idea what this game is about and making clear that it is a strategy game.

- Delusions of Great Power
- Gods on Earth (a bit over the top maybe)
- The Great Emporer
- Imperialisme/Imperialismi (danish or finnish for Imperialism)
- Heimsvaldastefna (icelandish)

How about "Empires of Blood and Steam" or maybe "Engines of Empire". Something that combines machinery and power.

Other than that I'd vote for Wealth of Nations: The Game, but I think that already exists.

Engines of Empire is also the name of a history book from 2002.
