There are many open source attempts at RPGs and many of them roguelikes or MMOs. Compared to the open source strategy games the variability of used programming languages seems to be a bit less. C++ (+C+Lua) dominating, then Java and Python or Html/Javascript and a bit of C#.

Interestingly enough, there are only a few open source adventure games (but quite a lot of open source adventure game engines, makers...), so I guess the bottleneck here is creative ideas and artists.
